Controller, Control Her, 2017
I am a Feminist and Masculinist female artist with a male name. This is for the purpose of exploring the masculine side of my identity. My work looks at the ways both men and women perceive masculinity and the constructs, stereotypes and roles we have built around masculinity in both men and women. It also explores the effects upon men and women when men live or don't live up to expectations of masculinity.
The future isn't female. neither is it male. It's Us. We've just not arrived at 'Us' yet.
'Controller, Control Her!' translates how the notion of controlling women is accepted - by men (and sometimes even women) in some cultures - as a "masculine" trait, part of the "role" of being male. It spotlights this as a "construct" - as are both masculinity and femininity, and therefore obliterates the acceptability of it.
